Job Purpose

The Practical Nurse provides appropriate patient care according to established care plans under the supervision of Registered Nurses in accordance with the Nursing Scope of Practice. The Practical Nurse adheres to and promotes the professional Nurses Code of Conduct for Abu Dhabi, while remaining responsible and accountable for his/her own actions. The role supports and promotes the mission, vision and values of the organization.

Responsibilities

• Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, assess and implement nursing care for patients ensuring a patient‑centered approach to care.
• Assist in activities of daily living for patients in accordance with the patient care plan, e.g., distribute patient meals and assist with hygiene needs.
• Report any significant changes in the patient’s condition to a registered nurse (RN) immediately.
• Respond to all levels of emergencies according to the organization’s policies and procedures.
• Ensure timely, accurate communication and complete documentation with patients, including verbal and written correspondence with the patient or the patient’s representative.
• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team in the management of effective and efficient patient‑centered care in a professional manner.
• Maintain documentation and participate in the use of information technology and relevant electronic medical records.
• Assist registered nurses (RNs) and clerical staff in administrative duties as required.
• Ensure patients and families receive comprehensive information and resources to meet their health care needs.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding patient and family information by promoting professional interdisciplinary communication.
• Provide feedback on strategies to decrease costs and promote effective utilization of resources.
• Maintain adequate inventory of examination room supplies and prepare exam rooms at the beginning and end of the day and between each patient contact.
• In an outpatient setting, interact with clinic patients during the appointment time frame, including greeting, rooming, taking vital signs, preparing the patient for exams or procedures, and providing follow‑up instructions.
• Ensure exam rooms, stations and clinic areas are stocked with adequate supplies to promote efficient patient care.
• Complete all other tasks and duties as assigned by the line manager.

Accountabilities

• Apply relationship‑building values and the principles of team dynamics to perform effectively in different team roles, in order to plan and deliver patient/population‐centered care that is safe, timely, efficient, effective, and equitable.
• Ensure the registered nurse is informed of observations and care provided for patients and that documentation is appropriately completed.
• Gather records of patients regarding current problems, medications, and allergies and review the medical record.
• Manage all timely communication and documentation relating to individual patient care as delegated by the nurse in charge.
• Maintain a safe and secure unit environment; identify, report, and document any risks and incidents appropriately.

Qualifications

Experience (Required) : Minimum of 1 year in a similar health setting.

Education (Required) :

• Diploma of Nursing (minimum 18 months course duration).
• Current National License.
• BLS certification.

Desired Certifications :

• ACLS
• PALS (relevant to the area of specialty).
