Staff Nurse – Tower D8 Burns ICU (BICU)

Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City – SSMC

Job Purpose: The Staff Nurse coordinates nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The Staff Nurse supports professional nursing practice across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The Staff Nurse will understand, support and promote the mission, vision and values of SSMC; provides age‑appropriate patient care according to the Nursing Scope of Practice as defined by the regulatory body. The Staff Nurse will adhere to and promote the Professional Nurses Code of Conduct for Abu Dhabi and UAE.

Responsibilities

  • Assessment and Diagnosis
    • Collect and analyze assessment data to determine diagnosis or issues.
    • Use evidence‑based assessment techniques and instruments.
    • Prioritize data and identify potential risks or barriers.
    • Document data in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Planning and Outcomes Identification
    • Identify expected outcomes and develop plans addressing health promotion, restoration, and maintenance.
    • Involve patient, family and healthcare team members in planning.
    • Apply evidence‑based nursing practices to develop plans.
    • Modify plans based on ongoing assessment.
    • Document outcomes as measurable goals.
  • Implementation and Coordination of Care Delivery
    • Implement plan of care in partnership with patient, family and team.
    • Perform treatments and procedures per guidelines and protocols.
    • Administer medications per organization policies.
    • Ensure documentation of all care components.
    • Communicate relevant information across levels of care.
    • Demonstrate cost‑effective resource use.
  • Health Teaching and Health Promotion
    • Utilize teaching strategies appropriate to patient condition and learning needs.
    • Use health promotion to support patients and families in developing healthy lifestyles and self‑management.
    • Seek feedback and evaluation of teaching effectiveness.
    • Document health education in patient record.
  • Evaluation
    • Evaluate progress toward outcomes.
    • Assess patient/family understanding of the plan.
    • Use assessment data to revise diagnoses and plans.
    • Involve patient, family and team in evaluation.
    • Provide comprehensive clinical handover reports.
  • Evidence‑Based Practice and Research
    • Integrate evidence and research findings into practice.
    • Participate in evidence‑based and research activities appropriate to education and position.
    • Share findings with the healthcare team.
    • Participate in performance improvement projects.
  • Leadership
    • Act as professional role model promoting a positive, team‑based workplace.
    • Coordinate and supervise delegated activities.
    • Demonstrate critical thinking in priority setting and decision making.
    • Pursue informal and formal leadership opportunities.
    • Participate in shared decision‑making to improve practice and outcomes.
    • Supervise practical nurses, junior staff and student nurses.
  • Accountabilities
    • Apply principles of professional ethics, maintain therapeutic relationships and act as advocate.
    • Speak up to question practices relevant to safety and quality.
    • Disclose illegal or incompetent practices per policy.
    • Evaluate own practice in relation to standards and guidelines.
    • Consider effectiveness, cost, environmental health and impact on practice.
    • Utilize current resources and electronic resources for information retrieval, communication and documentation.
    • Respond to emergencies per policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Experience
    • Required: Minimum 2 years clinical experience post‑qualification in an appropriate setting (waived for graduates of UAE nursing colleges/universities after internship).
    • Desired: N/A
  • Education
    • Required: Bachelor degree in nursing or equivalent degree (minimum two years course duration) with registration as a Registered Nurse from Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, or Australia and a valid/current national license and BLS certification.
    • Desired: ACLS, PALS relevant to area of specialty.
