As an Android engineer at Shackle, you work on our guest facing app, spanning the key domains of core guest experience, integration, payments, food & beverage, or activities. Being part of an early stage team, this is a high impact role. You collaborate directly with the backend engineers to deliver solutions end-to-end. You work closely with product management to build a detailed understanding of Shackle’s business and the problems we are solving for our users, giving you the autonomy to work out the best solution.

Shackle guest apps are the only channel for hotel guests. Our entire experience is mobile first.

Your day to day at Shackle involves:

• Working on our guest-facing Android app.
• Working directly with UI / UX designers to evolve our in-house component libraries and design system.
• Working with backend engineers to create a specification for the API for a new feature.
• Talking to hotel users to better understand their needs and be able to create a superior experience that supports their workflow.
• Dealing with door lock hardware, and third party integrations to operate the BLE enabled locks with the device.

About You

You are a problem solver by nature. Shackle does not expect engineers to be factory workers, churning through endless streams of JIRA tickets (we don’t use JIRA, for what it’s worth). You are empowered to solve problems in a way that benefits our business and users. You use this empowerment with responsibility by taking ownership of your work, collaborating directly with your peers, and raising relevant concerns in the business.

You probably have a BSc or MSc in a technical discipline (but this is not a requirement). You have working knowledge of a couple of programming languages. You care about contemporary Android and mobile developments in order to make better tradeoffs, because you appreciate that tradeoffs are a reality and there are no perfect solutions.

You bring the following traits to the team:

• Engineering Productivity, striking the right balance between getting things done and researching designs.
• Good Software Development Practices, making for maintainable code, and testable software.
• Experience launching and scaling apps, including testing, releasing, and other lifecycle considerations.
• Experience with mobile app architecture, and pragmatic use of available tooling to support build, and deployment pipelines.
• Expert knowledge of contemporary Android development, including Kotlin, MVVM, Jetpack and Hilt.
