Role Context

The Tunnel Inspector will provide continuous field supervision across NATM galleries, TBM interfaces, shafts, station connections, and associated underground civil works. The position requires close coordination with geotechnical, structural, survey, instrumentation, design, QA/QC, HSE, and construction teams to ensure excavation and support systems respond correctly to actual ground conditions. Accurate inspection and rapid identification of abnormal behavior will help protect tunnel stability, adjacent assets, construction quality, and safe progress through complex underground interfaces.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist the Resident Engineer with supervision of tunnel galleries, NATM works, TBM interfaces, shafts, temporary works, and underground structures.
• Monitor NATM gallery excavation against approved drawings, specifications, excavation sequences, method statements, and temporary support designs.
• Verify that each excavation cycle follows the approved excavation class and support class.
• Inspect scaling, shotcrete, rock bolts, lattice girders, steel ribs, wire mesh, forepoling, spiles, drainage, waterproofing, and invert construction.
• Confirm that support installation reflects actual geological conditions and observational method requirements.
• Coordinate with geotechnical engineers when encountered ground conditions differ from design assumptions.
• Monitor geological face mapping during excavation.
• Record rock quality, fractures, joints, groundwater, weak zones, cavities, and other adverse geological features.
• Review actual geological conditions against approved design information.
• Monitor tunnel convergence, deformation, settlement, crown movement, face stability.
• Coordinate with instrumentation and monitoring teams to review readings against approved trigger, alert, and action levels.
• Escalate abnormal monitoring results for engineering assessment and mitigation.
• Inspect shotcrete surface preparation, thickness, reinforcement, fibre content, design mix, rebound control, curing, and testing.
• Verify temporary support systems are installed in the correct sequence and configuration.
• Coordinate with survey teams to check excavation profiles, alignment, chainage, levels, dimensions, overbreak, and underbreak.
• Monitor gallery setting‑out, pilot excavation, enlargement, scaling, temporary support, waterproofing, reinforcement, and permanent concrete lining.
• Supervise gallery construction occurring alongside advancing TBM operations.
• Ensure safe coordination between gallery teams and TBM crews to avoid construction conflicts.
• Monitor water ingress during excavation and verify appropriate drainage, dewatering, and support measures.
• Inspect gallery and station headwall connections with the main tunnel.
• Check structural openings, reinforcement continuity, waterproofing details, drainage provisions, and final lining interfaces.
• Coordinate technical issues with Structural, Geotechnical, Survey, Instrumentation and Monitoring, and Design teams.
• Verify that excavation, support installation, survey data, inspection records, and as‑built information are accurately maintained.
• Monitor TBM operations associated with station approaches, break‑in, breakthrough, and break‑out activities.
• Inspect installation of seal rings, cradles, push frames, and other station interface components where applicable.
• Monitor preparations at launching and retrieval shafts for TBM assembly and disassembly.
• Observe TBM lifting, lowering, shifting, positioning, assembly, and dismantling activities.
• Verify compliance with approved lifting plans and method statements.
• Monitor risks arising from TBM operations close to or beneath station structures and other sensitive assets.
• Coordinate enhanced monitoring with geotechnical and instrumentation teams in critical areas.
• Review daily NATM excavation reports, survey records, instrumentation reports, and testing documentation.
• Review shop drawings, method statements, temporary works proposals, technical submissions, ITPs, and construction correspondence.
• Provide technical guidance to contractor teams regarding approved construction methodology and inspection requirements.
• Coordinate with QA/QC and HSE teams to ensure underground works comply with quality and safety plans.
• Monitor contractor manpower, equipment, work fronts, construction sequencing, and planned production.
• Compare actual construction progress with approved programmes and identify emerging constraints.
• Identify non‑conforming work and support issuance and closure of observations and NCRs.
• Coordinate RFIs and corrective actions where technical clarification or remedial work is required.
• Participate in technical, interface, progress, coordination, and construction meetings.
• Liaise with contractors, subcontractors, design teams, authorities, and other project stakeholders on tunnel construction matters.

Ideal Profile

Candidates should hold a Bachelor 's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline from an accredited institution. A minimum of 4 years of construction supervision experience is required, including practical exposure to TBM tunnel or gallery operations on major tunneling or infrastructure projects. Applicants should have participated in at least one tunnel or gallery project from commencement through completion. Extensive practical knowledge of NATM construction sequences is mandatory. Candidates should understand excavation classes, temporary support systems, shotcrete, rock bolts, steel ribs, lattice girders, waterproofing, drainage, and permanent lining works. Experience coordinating NATM works with TBM operations and station interfaces will be highly valuable. Applicants should be familiar with geological face mapping, observational methods, ground behavior, tunnel convergence, settlement, and instrumentation monitoring. Knowledge of QA/QC procedures, Inspection Test Plans, material testing, and construction nonconformance processes is required. Candidates must be able to interpret shop drawings, specifications, technical proposals, temporary works designs, and method statements. Previous experience on metro rail or other large underground infrastructure projects is strongly preferred. UAE or GCC tunneling experience and familiarity with regional construction standards will be advantageous. Applicants should demonstrate strong attention to detail, disciplined documentation, and the ability to identify unsafe or non‑compliant construction conditions. Good written and spoken English is required for reporting, coordination, and technical communication.
