Job Summary

The Consultant Pediatrician & Neonatologist is responsible for providing comprehensive, evidence-based medical care to newborns, infants, children, and adolescents, including critically ill and premature neonates requiring specialized neonatal intensive care. The Consultant diagnoses, treats, and manages a wide range of pediatric and neonatal conditions while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure exceptional patient outcomes. The role supports quality improvement initiatives, patient safety, medical education, and clinical governance in accordance with DHA regulations and hospital policies.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

• Provide consultant-level assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for pediatric patients from birth through adolescence.
• Deliver specialized neonatal care, including management of premature and critically ill newborns.
• Provide clinical coverage for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), delivery rooms, nursery, pediatric wards, outpatient clinics, and emergency consultations.
• Attend high-risk deliveries and perform neonatal resuscitation when required.
• Develop individualized treatment plans using evidence-based clinical guidelines.
• Perform and interpret appropriate diagnostic investigations.
• Prescribe medications and therapeutic interventions safely and appropriately.
• Manage pediatric emergencies and stabilize critically ill patients.
• Coordinate referrals to other specialties when indicated.
• Maintain continuity of care through appropriate follow-up and discharge planning.
• Assess and manage premature, low birth weight, and medically complex neonates.
• Provide advanced neonatal life support.
• Manage neonatal respiratory disorders, infections, congenital abnormalities, jaundice, feeding difficulties, and other neonatal conditions.
• Oversee ventilator management where applicable.
• Perform neonatal procedures within the scope of practice.
• Participate in family counseling regarding neonatal prognosis and treatment plans.

Patient Safety and Quality

• Adhere to DHA regulations, hospital policies, and international clinical standards.
• Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.
• Report adverse events, near misses, and patient safety concerns.
• Support infection prevention and control practices.
• Ensure accurate clinical documentation in the electronic medical record.
• Participate in mortality and morbidity reviews when required.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

• Work closely with obstetricians, anesthetists, pediatric surgeons, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and allied health professionals.
• Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions.
• Support coordinated patient-centered care.

Education and Professional Development

• Educate patients and families regarding disease prevention, treatment options, nutrition, vaccination, and child development.
• Mentor junior physicians, residents, interns, and medical students.
• Participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities.
• Maintain clinical competencies through ongoing professional development.

Administrative Responsibilities

• Maintain complete and timely medical records.
• Support hospital accreditation activities.
• Assist in developing clinical protocols and guidelines.
• Participate in on-call schedules as assigned.

Qualifications

• Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
• Completion of an accredited residency in Pediatrics.
• Fellowship or equivalent specialist qualification in Neonatology.
• Board Certification in Pediatrics and Neonatology (or equivalent internationally recognized qualification).
• DHA Consultant License or eligibility for Consultant licensure in Dubai.

Experience

• Minimum 8–10 years of post-specialization clinical experience in Pediatrics.
• Minimum 3–5 years of consultant-level experience in Neonatology.
• Extensive experience managing NICU patients.
• Experience in tertiary care or accredited hospitals is preferred.
