Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Superintendent

Reports To

Project Manager / Construction Manager / Operations Manager

The Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Superintendent is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising all electrical and instrumentation construction, installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and shutdown activities. The role ensures that projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with engineering specifications, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Project Planning & Execution

• Plan, organize, and supervise electrical and instrumentation activities for construction, maintenance, turnaround, and commissioning projects.
• Review engineering drawings, specifications, procedures, and project schedules.
• Develop manpower, equipment, and material requirements to support project execution.
• Monitor work progress and ensure activities are completed according to project timelines.
• Coordinate with engineering, procurement, QA/QC, HSE, and other project disciplines.

Supervision & Team Management

• Lead and supervise E&I supervisors, foremen, technicians, electricians, instrument technicians, and subcontractors.
• Assign work activities and monitor workforce productivity.
• Conduct daily briefings, toolbox talks, and safety meetings.
• Provide technical guidance, coaching, and performance management to team members.
• Ensure adherence to company policies and project procedures.

Electrical Systems Oversight

• Supervise installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical systems and equipment.
• Oversee cable laying, cable tray installation, terminations, switchgear, transformers, motors, MCCs, UPS systems, and lighting systems.
• Ensure compliance with electrical codes, standards, and project specifications.
• Verify proper testing and documentation of electrical systems.

Instrumentation & Control Systems Oversight

• Supervise installation, calibration, testing, and commissioning of instrumentation and control systems.
• Oversee field instruments, analyzers, control valves, PLCs, DCS, SCADA systems, and communication networks.
• Ensure proper loop checking, functional testing, and commissioning activities.
• Verify instrument calibration records and system documentation.

Quality Assurance & Control

• Ensure all E&I work complies with project specifications, drawings, and quality standards.
• Coordinate inspections with QA/QC teams and client representatives.
• Review test reports, punch lists, and quality documentation.
• Implement corrective actions for identified deficiencies.

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

• Enforce company and project safety policies and procedures.
• Ensure compliance with electrical safety standards, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and permit-to-work systems.
• Conduct risk assessments and hazard identification activities.
• Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions.
• Promote a strong safety culture across the workforce.

Materials & Resource Management

• Monitor material availability and coordinate procurement requirements.
• Ensure proper storage, handling, and control of electrical and instrumentation materials.
• Optimize utilization of manpower, equipment, and resources.
• Monitor inventory and reduce material wastage.

Reporting & Stakeholder Coordination

• Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports.
• Attend project meetings and provide updates on E&I activities.
• Coordinate with clients, consultants, vendors, and subcontractors.
• Resolve technical and operational issues affecting project execution.

Cost & Schedule Control

• Monitor labor productivity and project expenditures.
• Assist in budget control and forecasting activities.
• Identify opportunities for improving efficiency and reducing project costs.
• Support project closeout and handover activities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field.
• Relevant technical certifications and trade qualifications are advantageous.
• Minimum 8–15 years of experience in electrical and instrumentation projects, including supervisory or superintendent-level experience.

Required Skills & Competencies

• Strong knowledge of electrical systems, instrumentation, automation, and control systems.
• Experience with PLC, DCS, SCADA, and industrial automation systems.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, schematics, and technical specifications.
• Strong leadership and workforce management skills.
• Knowledge of industry standards such as IEC, IEEE, NEC, ISA, API, and NFPA.
• Excellent planning, scheduling, and project coordination abilities.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and project management software.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional engineering registration or equivalent certification.
• Experience in oil & gas, petrochemical, power generation, mining, manufacturing, or industrial construction projects.
• Certifications in electrical safety, commissioning, HSE, or project management (PMP, OSHA, NEBOSH, etc.).
• Experience with commissioning and startup activities for large-scale industrial facilities.
