Consultant Palliative Medicine

Black Pearl Consult is hiring an experienced Consultant Palliative Medicine / Palliative Care Physician to provide specialist clinical care across palliative medicine and supportive care services.

This is an opportunity for a senior physician with specialist expertise in   palliative medicine, palliative care, complex symptom management, pain management and supportive care   to join a multidisciplinary clinical environment serving patients with advanced, chronic and life-limiting illnesses.

The successful candidate will work closely with oncology, internal medicine, surgery, critical care, nursing, pharmacy, psychology and allied health teams to provide specialist palliative care across the patient journey.

The role combines direct clinical care with multidisciplinary consultation, complex symptom management, communication with patients and families, advance care planning, clinical governance and service improvement.

About the Role

The Consultant Palliative Medicine Physician will provide specialist assessment and management for patients living with serious, advanced and life-limiting illnesses.

The role is not limited to end-of-life care. Palliative medicine may be provided alongside active treatment, with the focus on improving quality of life, managing complex symptoms and supporting patients and families through difficult stages of illness.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide specialist palliative medicine assessment, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing clinical management.
  
• Assess and manage patients with advanced cancer and other serious, progressive or life-limiting conditions.
  
• Provide expert management of complex physical symptoms including pain, breathlessness, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, delirium and other distressing symptoms.
  
• Provide specialist cancer-related and non-cancer pain management.
  
• Develop individualised palliative and supportive-care plans based on clinical needs, patient preferences and goals of care.
  
• Provide inpatient and outpatient palliative care and specialist consultation to other hospital departments.
  
• Work closely with oncology, internal medicine, surgery, intensive care, emergency medicine, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, social work and allied health teams.
  
• Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, case conferences and complex clinical decision-making.
  
• Support patients and families with sensitive discussions regarding prognosis, treatment options and goals of care.
  
• Lead or contribute to advance care planning and treatment-preference discussions.
  
• Provide clinical advice regarding symptom control and appropriate escalation or de-escalation of treatment.
  
• Support patients and families through end-of-life care where clinically appropriate.
  
• Contribute to continuity of care and appropriate discharge planning.
  
• Maintain high standards of clinical documentation and communication.
  
• Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and patient-safety activities.
  
• Contribute to the development and improvement of palliative-care pathways, protocols and clinical services.
  
• Support education, mentoring and development of junior doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
  
• Participate in relevant clinical research, education and service-development initiatives.
  
• Maintain professional competence and comply with hospital policies, regulatory requirements and applicable UAE healthcare standards.
  
• Promote compassionate, respectful, culturally sensitive and patient-centred care.
  

Requirements

We are looking for an experienced   Consultant / Specialist Physician in Palliative Medicine or Palliative Care   with a strong clinical background in managing patients with complex and advanced illness.

Essential

• Primary medical degree such as MBBS, MBChB or equivalent from a recognised medical school.
  
• Recognised postgraduate specialist qualification in   Palliative Medicine, Palliative Care or Hospice and Palliative Medicine, as applicable to the candidate's training pathway and UAE licensing requirements.
  
• Consultant-level clinical experience appropriate to the position.
  
• Significant post-specialisation experience in palliative medicine/palliative care.
  
• Demonstrable experience managing complex symptoms and pain.
  
• Experience caring for patients with advanced malignancy and/or other life-limiting conditions.
  
• Experience working within multidisciplinary clinical teams.
  
• Strong communication skills and the ability to discuss sensitive clinical issues with patients and families.
  
• Experience with goals-of-care discussions and advance care planning.
  
• Current medical registration/licence or eligibility for UAE licensing.
  
• Eligibility for the appropriate   DHA licence or other relevant UAE health authority licence, subject to the applicable regulatory requirements.
  
• Evidence of continuing professional development and professional good standing.
  

Desirable

• Fellowship or equivalent higher specialist qualification in Palliative Medicine.
  
• UK CCT/CCST, American Board, Canadian Royal College, European Board or another recognised international specialist qualification.
  
• Experience in a comprehensive cancer centre or tertiary oncology service.
  
• Strong cancer-pain management experience.
  
• Experience in intensive care, acute medicine, oncology, geriatrics or another closely related specialty.
  
• Experience developing palliative-care services, clinical pathways or protocols.
  
• Clinical leadership, teaching, research, audit or quality-improvement experience.
  
• Previous UAE or GCC clinical experience.
  
• Existing DHA/DOH/MOHAP eligibility or transferable UAE licensing status.
  
• Experience working in a multicultural or international healthcare environment.
