Laboratory Technician

Responsibilities

Follows all procedures and policies and demonstrates competency and proficiency as required.

• Perform testing in all the sections of the laboratory including Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Serology, and Blood Banking.
• Collect specimens: verify the identity of the patient and label all samples according to established procedures; obtain blood specimens by skin puncture or venipuncture using appropriate technique; maintain integrity of specimens; collect and prepare body fluid specimens for testing.
• Respond appropriately to results with STAT, call results, patient waiting or timed specimens, and notify physicians of critical lab values with complete documentation.
• Review pending and outstanding reports on each shift and follow up to resolve outstanding specimens.
• Segregate and pack outsourced lab specimens according to requirements on a timely basis.
• Consult with other departments and referral labs to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
• Run, document and analyze quality control tests per Department policy (when appropriate).
• Use the laboratory information system to release patient results per department policy.
• Collect data and statistics needed in the quality improvement plan for the laboratory as per laboratory manager instructions.
• Utilize available resources to maintain and fix instruments or solve problems.
• Attend team meetings; effectively orient and mentor new staff as requested.
• Participate in the CME program for the laboratory.
• Maintain confidentiality of matters relating to patients.
• Maintain the chain of command based on established policies and procedures.
• Work cooperatively with team members to identify and complete laboratory administrative responsibilities and meet department goals.
• Participate in hospital/department activities to improve patient care/lab systems.
• Participate in the maintenance of appropriate accreditation by regulatory agencies and share new information with all team members.
• Adhere to infection control policies and protocols including the use of PPE appropriately.

Qualifications

Qualification

• BSc/Diploma in laboratory sciences or equivalent.
• Experience: 2 years in laboratory field.
• Technical Skills: Computer Windows and LIS knowledge required.
• Quality Assurance skills required.
